New Initiative Available For Researchers: Sperm Cryopreservation Service

With the generous assistance of the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, several initiatives have been started to help investigators more effectively utilize mouse resources at the University of Iowa.

  • The Facility is now offering sperm cryopreservation as a service.  For more information, please contact William Paradee, Ph.D., Director of Genome Editing Core Facility at office: (319) 335-4495; lab: (319) 335-4060 or
  • A searchable database has been developed to help investigators locate mouse strains that are already housed on campus. This database was initially designed based on ideas from Dr. Curt Sigmund, Dr. Paul Cooper, and Dr. Michael Anderson.  It was implemented by the Office of Information Technology at the University of Iowa Carver College Of Medicine.

To encourage use of this new database, the Transgenic and Genomic Manipulation Facility will offer an initial sperm cryopreservation sample at no cost to investigators in exchange for signing up to use the database and entering information from their mouse strains.  This offer is limited to the first 100 responding Principal Investigators with cryopreservation projects initiated in the next 6 months.  The intent is that both the sperm cryopreservation service and searchable database will become a permanent resource on campus.  Henry Keen, Assistant Research Scientist and an experienced animal user, is willing to come to your laboratory to demonstrate use of the database and to assist with entering of strain data.
